Retirement Is About More Than Money
When most people think about retirement planning, they immediately think about saving enough money. While financial security is certainly important, I’ve found there’s another piece of the puzzle that’s just as critical.
After working with hundreds of retirees, I’ve learned there are two retirement tests everyone should consider:
- Financial Readiness
- Personal Readiness
Financial Readiness
Financial readiness is the part most people focus on. It’s understanding where your retirement income will come from such as Social Security, pensions, and investment portfolios and making sure it can support your lifestyle, healthcare needs, and taxes.
The good news is that this is largely a math problem. With the right plan in place, you can gain confidence that your finances will support the retirement you envision.
Personal Readiness
The question many people overlook is:
What are you retiring to?
Retirement isn’t just about leaving your career it’s about creating a fulfilling next chapter. I encourage clients to think about four key areas:
- Purpose: How will you stay engaged and make a difference?
- People: How will you spend time with family, friends, and your community?
- Health: What will you do to support your physical and mental well-being?
- Growth: What new experiences, hobbies, or skills do you want to pursue?
These conversations are especially important for couples, who may have different visions for retirement.
A Successful Retirement Is More Than Financial
Some of the happiest retirees I’ve worked with aren’t simply financially prepared they’ve intentionally built a life they enjoy. They’re traveling, volunteering, mentoring, spending time with family, and continuing to grow in meaningful ways.
Whether you’re five years from retirement or already retired, it’s never too early or too late to think about both the financial and personal sides of this transition.
As you plan for retirement, ask yourself one simple question:
What am I retiring to?
Because the goal isn’t just to retire from work it’s to retire to a life that brings purpose, fulfillment, and freedom.
